My BQ Christmas present for you is something to think about. It’s your vision for your career and yourself. Many people contact me for advice on where they should go in their careers and how to develop themselves. Some are early doors in their careers, some are in the middle and some are meandering toward retirement.
My first piece of advice to them is: take a step back and create a vision for yourself. Have a think through (perhaps with your partner if you have one) where you see your life being. Don’t focus on specific jobs, or specific companies you’re working for (or might want to work for), or even specific businesses you start yourself. Just consider where you see yourself and what your life looks and feels like in five, ten and 20 years’ time.
Split your vision into three streams of activity:
- Income generation – How much is necessary for the life you want?
- Personal – Where do you want to live? Where will your children (if you have them) go to school? What is most important to you?
- Wellbeing and achievement – What kinds of things are you going to do for yourself?
If you create your roadmap from this information, you will give yourself a North Star from which you can inform decision making. Once you know where you’re going, you can draw dotted lines back from that which can influence the kinds of decisions you make. Perhaps you push for a promotion, leave and get a job somewhere else, move to a different area or start your own business.
If you develop your vision through that kind of lens, you will be much more successful no matter what decision you make. We do have a free tool in our Destination Freedom programme to help get you down the road you have visualised. You can find it here: https://destinationfreedom.online/playbook
